01 / The story

An unexpected meeting, a shared adventure

A French sports teacher arrives in China and is mistaken for a French-language teacher. He agrees to teach, then meets a Chinese sports teacher and introduces him and the pupils to pétanque. As a team takes shape and an unexpected competition approaches, they learn to work together across differences in language and culture.

Filmed in China, Le Laowaï brings a French sports teacher into a Chinese school, where a misunderstanding over his role opens the door to a shared adventure. Humour, friendship and the discovery of pétanque bring the two cultures into conversation.
